Lead Poisoning Prevention
The West Haven Health Department wants
to reduce the incidence of lead poisoning among children
residing in the city. It does this by providing families a
better understanding of lead poisoning, their treatment plan
and environmental hazards caused by lead dust and
encouraging parents and providers to have children screened
for lead at the recommended intervals.
The Health Department will provide a home assessment and
health instruction for the families of children diagnosed
with high lead levels. A Sanitarian will visit the home to
conduct an environmental/epidemiological investigation and
to provide health instruction about lead and its harmful
effects, information about treatment and guidance to
removing the hazards.
All blood lead levels > 10 ug/dl and capillary screening levels elevated over 10 are reported to the Health Department. We will respond to all reports of blood lead levels over 10 ug/dl with a letter to the family offering lead education and a home visit.
